Zainab Fatima Cochlear Implant

Zainab Fatima is a five-year-old girl that hails from the city of Rawalakot in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Like every other girl her age, she has her dolls, is always ready to play, loves to roam around and also aspires to go to school. But, there was one obstacle in her life that differentiates her experience from that of other children – she couldn’t hear.

Zainab was born with a hearing disability. Her father, like any father would, traveled all around Pakistan with her girl for 5 years to find treatment for her daughter. He made several trips to major cities of Pakistan, piled up debts, traveled from one doctor to another, traveled from one hospital to another in his search to find relief and support for his daughter’s hearing impairment.

By the time he reached the right institutions or got aware of government grants, he got to know that Zainab was not preferred anymore, she isn’t the ideal candidate. She has run out of time and was still months away from receiving the government grant. Cochlear transplants are more successful if these transplants are carried out at age 5 or under. Since, she had turned 5, her chances of success had diminished.

And that’s when FRDP International and its donors stepped in to give Zainab a fighting chance to hear once again. The medical team examined her and due to their strong recommendation, the organization proceeded with raising funds for a cochlear implant to enable her hearing. Within few weeks, the funds were raised and after thorough diagnostics and tests, the surgery was successfully carried during the holy month of Ramadan.

Zainab can now hear! Her speech therapy classes are going to start and soon we shall her speak too.

Without this transplant, she would have never been able to hear. The only difference between success and failure is the ability to take action – and the action taken by the donors, the doctors, the team at FRDP International, her parents and most importantly Little Zainab herself enabled this dream, converted this miraculous dream in reality no one dreamed to be possible. We are grateful to all involved for their support in helping Little Zainab hear.

Battle For Dignity

Poverty is crippling, be it urban or rural. When marred with domestic issues, the battle becomes nearly impossible to win, especially when you are all alone. Maryam had found about FRDP International‘s orphan sponsorship program and wanted to register the daughters as orphans even though the father of the girls was still alive. That’s how crippling poverty was. The struggle to bring food and get education for her girls brought her to this point.

We found a better solution. Since, she was a local beautician but was struggling due to non-availability of equipment, furniture and cosmetics. We bought her furniture, chair, equipment and lots of cosmetics.

Through your empathy, we enabled her to earn a livelihood that restored her dignity and provided her economic independence.

The struggle is for survival

The struggle for water is real in the deserts of Tharparkar, located in one of the most remote part of Pakistan, the communities struggle to quench their thirst. The struggle in the desert terrain is just not restricted to scarcity of water; the struggle for the drought struck communities is over and above. Here’s a quick documentary that depicts the issues these indigenous communities face in the search of water. The search and quest for water consists of battling hardship and injuries (at times fatal), exposing them to major protection issues, also deprives women of livelihood opportunities and children of education due to the time they have to spent in arranging water for themselves to survive; survival preceding a better livelihood, survival preceding access to education.
